Last August 23-24, Georgia undertook the inaugural Great Georgia Pollinator Census. The census provided information never before collected by citizen scientists. This year, the Census will again occur on August 21-22. The ambitious project is believed to be the first such census undertaken.

“Led by University of Georgia Extension Cooperative, this community science initiative project resulted in over 4,600 counts submitted with over 133,000 insect visits tallied and reported,” reported Becky Griffin, school and community garden coordinator for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and the pollinator count organizer.
“Eighty-five percent of Georgia’s 159 counties had participants submit results. As far as we know this is the only census of its kind in the country and so our tagline for the project was ‘Be Part of Georgia Pollinator History.’”

Shishir Rao, a PhD student in Ecology, participated in the 2019 Great Georgia Pollinator Census.
