MFA Exit Show

A Highlight for the Georgia Museum of Art and Visually Rich Expression of Talents

by Cynthia Adams

This year the work of 14 Master of Fine Arts degree candidates at the Lamar Dodd School of Art was exhibited at the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia from April 8 – May 14. This year’s graduates included Thomas Bosse, Reid Brechner, Julia Megan Burchett, Ellie Dent, Jamie Diaz, Arron Foster, Meirav Goldhour, Zachary Harris, Ariel Lockshaw, Shuk Han Lui, Jonathan Nowell, Amanda Scheutzow, Stephanie Sutton and Dan Vu.

This year’s graduates work in a variety of media. The show encompassed printmaking, painting, jewelry making, photography and metal working, engaged in an imaginatively diverse set of themes.

According to Sarah Kate Gillespie, the curator of American art and of the MFA exhibition, it is a varied and complex one in its themes and depictions. The MFA candidates produced drawings, paintings, sculpture, pottery and ceramic works. They also exhibited mixed media, three-dimensional installations, printmaking, papermaking and videos.

The run for this year’s exit show was extended through UGA’s Commencement. This unusually long showing was done to allow for greater opportunity for patrons, students, and their families to experience the impressive show, which required multiple rooms and included a multiplicity of mediums.

Gillespie said that in preparing the exhibition, she considered unifying themes as well as how to optimally position the works. In an interview, Gillespie expressed that the MFA exit show was among the highlights of the Museum’s annual calendar. Sponsors of the event include The Lamar Dodd School of Art, the W. Newton Morris Charitable Foundation and the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art
